From Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir, the distance of Zoji La Pass is 9 km (5.6 mi). The pass functions as a major link between Ladakh and Kashmir. It is situated at a height of about 11,575 ft (3,528 meters). The Zojila Pass ranks as the second highest pass in India, preceded by Fotu La Pass situated on the National Highway between Srinagar and Leh.
The pass usually stays closed during the winter months; However, the Border Roads Organization (BRO) is operating to boost traffic for the greater part of the year. The Beacon Force division of the Border Roads Organization is responsible for the removal of snow and preservation of the path during winters.
The next place to visit after the Zoji la pass is Drass valley. It is located 60 kilometres west of Ladakh and is popularly known as the second coldest inhabited region in the world. The valley starts from the foot of the Zoji la pass and has an elevation of 10, 764 feet above sea level. Highways are quite good in condition and it doesn’t take a lot of time to reach Kargil from Drass. Searching for a budget hotel can be challenging in Drass. After Drass, the road goes straight to Kargil which is the midpoint of this Srinagar-Leh Zone. It is a second largest town of Ladakh after Leh, situated on the bank of the Suru River. This is a very fertile valley, after crossing this begins the cold desert of Ladakh. Kargil is also a Gateway to the Zanskar Valley.

The monastery is an abode to almost 150 monks, it showcases a variety of artefacts, wall paintings, thangkas, statues and carpets. The 11-headed, 1000 eyed image of Chenzing here is very impressive. Lamayuru is amidst a picturesque landscape and thus attracts a lot of photographers and trekkers.
