There are two approaches/roads that bikers, road trippers and drivers take to reach Ladakh. One is Srinagar-Leh Highway and the more popular one is Manali-Leh Highway. Ladakh is accessible by roadways only during the summer season as the NH 1 and Zoji La remains closed during the winter due to heavy snowfall. Buses and taxis are easily available from Kargil and Srinagar to reach Ladakh. The road trips to Ladakh from Delhi, Srinagar and Manali are quite famous as thrilling adventure activities.


Reach Ladakh by Srinagar-Leh Highway (first approach)

Reach Ladakh from Kashmir Valley through Kargil, which is around 434 kms. J&K SRTC runs regular deluxe and ordinary bus services between Srinagar and Leh with a night stay in Kargil. You can also hire cars, jeeps or taxis in Srinagar. If traveling in groups you can rent deluxe buses for Leh, Kargil or Padum (Zanskar) from J & K SRTC at Srinagar.

Reach Ladakh by Manali-Leh Highway (second approach)

Manali-Leh road is of 490 kms and since 1989 has been another route to Ladakh. This route is open from mid-June to early October. The road passes through the desert plateau of Rupsho and is around 3660m to 4570m high. There are a number of high passes falling on the route, Taglang-La being second highest motor-able road in the world, 17469 feet (5235m) above the sea level.

On this road trip, you will traverse through high mountain passes, narrow passes, hair pin bends and scenic valleys where one can capture nostalgic photographs. Himachal Pradesh Tranport (HRTC) and J & K SRTC run daily deluxe and ordinary buses between Manali and Leh; that takes around 24 hours (or two days) with night halt in camps at Sarchu or Pang. You can also hire a Gypsy or jeep taxis.

Indian Airlines operates 3 flight in a week between Leh and Delhi, 2 flights in a week from Jammu and once in a week from Srinagar. Jet Airways also operates six flights in a week between Leh – Delhi and Go Air operates daily flight Between Leh – Delhi.


Reach Ladakh by Train – Taking Train upto Chandigarh and Jammu tawi 

If you are planning a Trip to Ladakh by train the closest railroad station is Jammu Tawi (700 km from Ladakh) which is all around associated with Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. You can enlist a taxi or board a JKSRTC transport to achieve Ladakh from that point. Pathankot and Chandigarh are the nearest railroad stations to Leh, still a three-day transport ride away.
